Editorial Review
The Master [Blu-ray] is a gripping drama directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, focusing on the complex relationship between a troubled World War II veteran, Freddie Quell, portrayed brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix, and the charismatic leader of a philosophical movement, Lancaster Dodd, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. The film intricately explores themes of power, control, and the human psyche, highlighting Freddie's struggle for stability in a chaotic world. Viewers appreciate the exceptional performances, particularly the chemistry between the leads, which elevates the narrative despite some criticism regarding the film's pacing and clarity in moral lessons. The film invites multiple interpretations, beyond its controversial allusions to Scientology.
