- Having been in the industry more than 25 years, Boveda is a trusted & experienced brand in relative humidity control. But what does that even mean? Relative humidity (RH) refers to the percentage of humidity within an environment. In other words, it answers the question, 'how moist or dry is the air?' Before you use Boveda packs in a wooden container, you have to season the wood. Boveda scientists tested to find the safest, most effective seasoning method. We tried everything from 95% RH all the way down to 32% RH. At a low RH, seasoning takes longer. At a high RH, you risk damaging the wood. After trying them all, we found that 84% RH is just right. CONTROLLED, CAREFUL SEASONING TAKES TIME. Boveda for Seasoning humidifies over 14 days & drives moisture deep into the wood. Most of the water vapor is released in week 1. The rest of the time, the cell structure of the wood slowly absorbs the moisture it needs, based on your specific box. WIPE-DOWN METHOD VS BOVEDA PACKS? DO NOT wipe down the inside of your humidifier box with a wet cloth or sponge. It doesn’t humidify the wood. To fully season a 100-count wood humidifier box, it needs about 100 grams of water, which 4 Size 60 packs achieve. At most, the wipe-down method provides 2 to 3 grams of moisture to the interior veneer. (Think of it like staining a piece of wood with water.) By introducing 100% moisture to the surface, you can also warp the wood & set the stage for mustiness. YUCK! Using Boveda for Seasoning sets a cedar box up for success. Just slip Boveda 84 into an EMPTY box. Close the lid & don’t open the box for 14 days. After 14 days, open the box, remove the Boveda seasoning packs & discard them—they aren’t reusable. Move your items back into your seasoned Spanish cedar humidifier box. Add new Boveda packs in your desired RH—65%, 69%, 72% or 75%.
