The Olympus WS-853 digital voice recorder is a decent upgrade from the previous WS-5xx models as it records and plays in stereo and has a more versatile recording format of .MP3. The device is easy to use and can use rechargeable batteries. However, it lacks the organization of files that the previous models had, which allowed for the use of subfolders. There is no separate folder for sound files, including MP3s, and the device does not recognize subfolders within the A through E folders. The button functions are also limited to selecting among the A through E folders, which causes difficulty accessing subfolders. The sound quality is sufficient with on-the-head headphones but the built-in speaker is not powerful enough. The digital recorder gets the job done but has some flaws.
