Eileen is a psychological thriller about a 24-year-old woman who lives with her alcoholic father and works in a juvenile correctional facility. The protagonist, Eileen, is emotional but stunted and has a strange obsession with bodily functions, perversion, and lies. Her life changes when Rebecca is hired as a counselor at the correctional facility. Rebecca is beautiful, proficient, and Harvard educated, unlike Eileen. Eileen is fascinating, dirty, and pitiable. The novel throws plot twists which turn it almost into a thriller. Eileen is a fully developed, unlikable but endearing character. The book delves entirely into its narrator while unfolding into two impulsive characters, each with their own mental difficulties, making it a brilliantly thoughtful novel. However, some parts of Rebecca's character are unclear, making her difficult to relate to at times.
