Harmonicas Editorial Review
**** The reception of this instructional material for the chromatic harmonica, authored by Phil Duncan, is mixed, showcasing various perspectives from customers ranging from enthusiastic endorsements to pointed criticisms. Positive reviewers commend the book for its thorough explanations of musical theory specific to the chromatic harmonica, highlighting the effectiveness of its structured approach to teaching. Users appreciate the variety of exercises and tunes included, which cater to a broad range of musical genres, thus providing a comprehensive educational resource. The materials that accompany the book, such as DVDs and CDs, further enhance the learning experience, giving users a sense of having a personal instructor. Several users express excitement and satisfaction with their progress after using the book. Conversely, some reviewers express significant frustrations regarding the instructional method. A notable criticism pertains to the way in which the book alternates between different octaves, which seems to confuse beginners rather than facilitate understanding. This aspect has led to claims that it complicates the learning process, requiring students to "unlearn" concepts prematurely introduced. Moreover, there are reports of the instructional content being sparse and skipping to songs too quickly, which could leave novices feeling lost. Overall, while many find immense value in Duncan's teaching approach and musical insight, a segment of users feels the book may not serve well as a sole instructional guide for complete beginners without prior knowledge of reading music or harmonica techniques. **
