While it is not completely waterproof, it still kept contents dry during light or short periods of rain. The bags do not separate but hold together with magnets when carried, making it easy to use as a single item. Some customers had issues with the mounting system, which is a single velcro strapping point at the bottom. However, once the bags are securely attached to the rack, they are durable even when packed with heavy gear.
